I was thinking while listening. You're right. Deciding where to put down roots is difficult. In 2020, I left my home, I moved only 5 km, just enough so that I am not in the city, but in the countryside, by the river. Now I have a 300 years old house and I have beautiful plans. Since I'm alone, I'm renovating slowly. I often wonder if I did the right thing. Well, I always come to the conclusion that I did. When I listen to you, I can easily imagine you finding what you are looking for in Slovenia. Many Brits have found their home here. Do a little research, you will be surprised. Our daughter lives in Italy and the corruption, Italian bureaucracy, taxes and requirements are definitely off putting. Maybe Portugal is easier, I don't know

I think I just figured out why your last caught on fire. You parked you van in storage unit out in farm land. You have mice infestations in the area and they like chew on wires and rubber hoses. I bet that was the reason why your last van caught on fires. I'm about 90% confident that was your problem. The next time you park your van long term I would pest control all the van of all the mice. Also you can buy a Inflatable Van cover. It seals your van from all the bugs, mice and elements. It should protect your van the next long term storage.

I find it amusing that you are in Itlay and your sonsot is Hello Fresh, and you are saying that you can "spend less time preparing food, and ....(etc.) Luca is right, no diets OR dissing food preparation - when in Italy, especially. This is cognitive dissonance in its definition! Hearing the story of Luca's medical journey and how it affected his family was very important to hear from a spontaneous questioning. I felt the empathy and compassion for their experience, again. The dearness of valuing life. Thank you. Enjoy Italy (I'm sure you will)!

FYI this last winter was one of the coldest in a very long time. Here in Stockholm it was -27°C but farther up in the northeren parts it was -40°C and alooooot of snow, they had snow until May. And badgers are dangerous AF, if they bite you, they break all of the bone they bite in to, they smash it in to pices. Also in some parts of Sweden for example parts of Dalarna, they have great areas with swine flue. You have to be careful in the woods, especially in the north where its more common to see wolves, bears, mooses and ofcourse those nasty badgers haha Wish you the best of luck with finding a property.

Friend's who have relocated from California to Porto (he is Portuguese and lived in the U.S. for 25 years, she is from Santa Cruz.) I visited for three weeks in March 2023.Friendly, kind folks, international place. Incredible and beautiful. Our immigration has destroyed the housing costs for locals there so things are shifting and the Golden Visa is gone.Yes, we can say compared to California we say: Affordable to Americans, yes. INCREDIBLE health care and health care service options. YES. Slow pace for life which is super. Incredible efficient trains. Frustrating government, slow, frustrating different concept of trades and work and deadlines, have not been able to easily navigate residency as a married couple with a Portuguese citizen. Killer hornets, crazy ass drivers that stop right in the middle of the street. Local bakeries and fresh bread and conversation in every neighborhood. so cool. Very Catholic. Very. Shame and smacking students is not seen as an issue so America parents are seen as pains in the ass and do not tolerate hovering. I saw the head teacher at my friends son's school tell her at pick up that he was acting like a baby today and whining too much and then lectured her on how so coddles him and that it is n't helping him at school. this is normal.. High deference to teachers and schools. Not a feminist country so do not be a single mother here, however they love children in married families that go to church and mothers as matriarchs and spend a lot of time with thier kids and grandkids.. Families revere sons, if they are blonde they treat them like baby jesus and favor them. It is weird and so sexist. not uncommon for the mother to be the only one who ever uses a kitchen and for men to expect to be served by a domestic wife. Soccer, soccer, soccer and more soccer. Nationalistic, racist but no more so than the U. S. Google is building a major tech campus in Porto near the beach and it is about to serious change Porto's affordability and accessibility in the next ten years. Families first, traditional, lots of fun things to do in country. I felt safe there , welcomed and so relaxed while visiting. I would love to be able to remote work there 3 or 4 months out of the year.

Good advice for everyone to take CPR and first aid training.And to remember that health is wealth...if you might die to morrow..how shall you live life today? AS far as finding a way to settle and where...I would look now at access to water, power and other climate and resource access. Then I would think about the government and social services..health care, senior care. I do not know how you could not consider these just as carefully as the cost of property.

Why should you be normal 😁 live you life and start small 👍 If you buy an older house, be very careful about insulating the house and rebuilding the heating system. An older house has a central heating system, for example a wood boiler. When you fire in a wood boiler, you ventilate the house very efficiently at the same time, however, it is expensive to heat the house this way. However, if you install an air/air heating system or air/water system to heat your house, you have removed the house's ventilation and risk speeding up the process of mold, bad odors and fungal attacks..... The best advice is to "live in" the house for a while, take advice from experts and renovate carefully.... Welcome and good luck

I would buy a home in Italy that was worth at least 4000 €. Because then you'd get a roof and at least something to work with and live in while restoring a room at a time and also being able to do it at your leisure instead of on their schedule.

Life is a journey from little babies out of the worm growing bigger towards 40/50 then shrinking towards later life as ZOE research shows it's all in you microbian handed down from you parents. Just do your own thing, be happy live life don't worry

I live 100 kms from Sweden, and wait until the winter arrives in September. It will be coal dark at 3 in the afternoon and you won't see a blue sky until May.

I live in the thumb of Michigan near the village of Almont. A couple of years ago I drove a school bus. I was about a mile from our home and a bald eagle flew up from the road in front of me and into a nest next to the road. Amazing.

I haven't noticed that anyone has already mentioned an import aspect of buying one of these properties, and that is the reality of trying to construct anything in a Mediterranean country. 😂 the materials come from far away, and have to be brought with trucks , the work ethic may be different from your expectations, as well as the methods used, lots of holidays when no one will work, linguistic difficulties and having to rely on others to negociate things while not being able to understand. Some one will most likely rip you off at some point, you'll spend much more money and everything will take ten times as long as you think it will. Not everyone can handle it. You've got to love being there.
